37th World and 48th European Championship,
14 - 30 March 1970, Stockholm, Sweden

WCh 1970

Originally was championship assignet to Montreal and Winnipeg in Canada.
But Canada can't set together a amateur team and CAHA declined a championship.
Championship was declined and displaced to Sweden

Hockey Canada tried to negotiate the entry of NHL players to the World Championships. All indications were that professionals would be allowed to compete at the 1970 World Championship, which was to be held in Canada for the first time in history. However, the president of the International Olympic Committee, Avery Brundage, stepped in and threatened that anyone who played against the Canadian pros would lose their amateur status and thus lose the opportunity to compete in the 1972 Olympic tournament. The IIHF took offense and cancelled the already promised entry of NHL players. Canada then did not participate in the World Championships or Olympic tournaments from 1970 to 1976 in protest against the latent professionalism of Eastern Bloc players.
