OG 1976

The 1976 Games were originally awarded to Denver, Colorado, USA, but fearing environmental damage and an increase in costs, the citizens of Colorado voted against staging the event. Denver withdrew as host, and Innsbruck was awarded its second Winter Olympics.

Sweden decided to join Canada in protesting the amateur rules and boycotted the matches. They were not happy with the fact that Soviet and Czechoslovakian state-funded players who were de facto professionals could participate, which meant that Eastern Bloc countries were able to send their best players, but Western countries were not
