IIHF MEDIA RELEASE
May 8, 1997 at 15.30
The IIHF World Championship Directorate today upon receiving further video
evidence from both Czech
and Canadian teams reviewed suspensions handed
out to four Canadian and four Czech Republic players following
their
May 7 game at the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland. The video evidence
was necessary
in order to clarify the role in which all eight players
participated in an ugly situation in late minutes of their game.
The objective of the review by a special sub-committee appointed by the
directorate was
to determine whether the players were justly and fairly
handled by penalties assessed by the referee
following the altercation.
The sub-committee upheld the one game suspensions for the Canadian players
Owen Nolan and Shean Donovan and also the one game suspensions for the
Czech Republic players Jiri Slegr and Robert Lang.
The Canadian players Rob Blake and Travis Green along with the Czech Replubic
players Vladimir Vujtek
and Libor Procházka were all assessed double minors
for roughing. These four players will be able to participate
with their
teams in their next scheduled game.
The intention of the sub-committee was to insure that the referee game report
was supplemented with sufficient
evidence insuring that the players were
justly treated. Appeals were lodged by both teams
asking that the directorate
review the penalties imposed on the players using the video evidence.
